At the end of last summer, three of our Juniors went off to the U.S.A. to further their education having been awarded Golf Scholarships from American colleges joining Theo Baker already into his second year Mount Mercy University Cedar Rapids Iowa.
Oliver Baker got a place at Middle Tennessee State University and Ed Mason was awarded a place at Lincoln Memorial University, Tennessee and Mason Barningham obtained a place at Junior College in North Idaho. He is hoping to go next August to Hilo College in Hawaii. All under the local tuition of Club Professional Chris Cutchie.
All three of the lads were quick to stress the wonderful facilities they enjoy at their respective colleges. When asked how hard they were made to work, the reply was unanimous – hard. Mason was keen to point out that on mornings involving workouts it was a 6 a.m shout, tough for any young man!
Whilst the tuition was excellent, and the money directed into college sport was enormous it was not gifted without having to put in 3 to four hours daily at practice and theory of the game plus their studies.
Baker’s College has an American Football Stadium with a capacity of over 20,000 and each of the lads were encouraged to play on the sumptuous local private golf clubs.
They stressed that with other scholarship boys coming from China to Estonia competition for the College Teams was fierce, and it was another competition they were back at the Club for, the Junior Xmas Cup.
Between Christmas and the New Year, the tradition of playing an Open Three Clubs and a Putter competition was maintained with Dominic Turnbull (18) claiming the trophy with a cracking 40 points.
Adam Miller (20) took second place with 38 points and Maxi Bozier (14) took third spot with 37 points,
These were the only players to break par. Simon Moore (15) and Stuart Watson (14) were the next two scoring 35 point each.
An excellent break between the holidays, enjoyed by all.
Junior Christmas Cup
The gross results of the Junior Xmas Cup put Ed Mason in first position with 38 points, Jack Binns in second at 35 with George Woodhead (0) third on 34.
Whereas the handicapped results gave 14 handicapper Maxi Bozier the win with 39 points and Jack Binns (3) taking second again with 38 points, Michael Bender (8) securing third place with 36 points along with Ed Mason (+2).
The Braiswick, Jubilee and Mens Foursomes Cups are being played from the permanent markers, unless they are unavailable due to renovation work.
