Tee Reservations 25th January - 3rd February

Pace of Play

Pace of play is becoming a serious issue affecting not only the group behind you but further back across the course.  Tips to maintain an appropriate level of play include:

  • Closely watching partners' shots, especially if they hit their ball towards a hazard
  • Hitting a provisional if there is any doubt among you of the location of a ball
  • Marking your card while others are putting out or after your next tee shot
  • Ensuring Ready Golf is played at all times

If the group behind you is clearly playing quicker, you should offer to let them through even if there are groups in front.  Similarly, if you are behind a slower group then please be pro-active and ask to be let through.

Lottery Draw

With the winner of the rollover draw not present, £200 is on offer in the February draw.

Mike Sutton won £200 with Steve Sheffield winning £100 and Bill Eke won £50.

News Report

(Clive Hebden)

With the Winter Leagues now into their knockout stages Colchester Golf Club put on a Walk-on-Stableford.

Unlike the weather, on a cold January Sunday, the competition for the top spot was hotly contested and went to a countback before the winner was declared

Adam Miller, playing off his nineteen handicap, got the nod over Ralph Charles (12), scoring nineteen points on his back nine holes. Miller crept above Charles by just the one point on the back nine to secure his victory after both players had played good golf with Miller’s handicap tipping the result in his direction.

Dominic Turnbull (17) was hard on their heels with his 35 points and a further point back in fourth place was Dan Connolly (15).

Three players recorded 33 points to take the minor placings with Colin Gathercole (7) leading the way in and accompanied by Adrian Livesley (20) and Edward Shanklyn (15).

Course News

The level of the 2nd pond has been reduced again to aid the drainage of sub-surface moisture on the 2nd and 17th holes.

Removal of more damaged and dying silver birches has taken place.

Ditch clearing is on-going, here is work done to a section from the 10th hole to the boundary earlier this week.

It is pleasing that the weather during the winter has so far allowed us to play more or less continuous golf.  We keep our fingers crossed that this will continue over the next few months as we move towards Spring. Following the issue of the Captain’s newsletter on the Club’s approach to playing winter golf, we have now issued on the Governance section of the website a Policy which endorses in more detail our approach for opening the course during the winter and in dealing with adverse winter conditions. This document will continue to stay under review as we will adapt it where our experience makes that prudent.  We hope you continue to enjoy playing your golf during the rest of the winter.
