Weekly News 7th March

Spring is definitely here!

Teeing Areas

We have in recent weeks seen a significant increase in play by members from teeing areas outside of those designated for general and WHS play. This has included members who would normally play from the purple tees playing from the red tee areas and areas adjacent to the existing mats and yellow tee areas. As a result, we have seen pronounced deterioration in several of the red tee areas, especially on the Par 3’s and the areas to the side of some Purple mats.

If you don’t normally play from the red tees during Summer, we would prefer that you do not use them now.  Grass teeing areas adjacent to the purple mats must not be used, as stated in our local rules.

We are not yet consistently experiencing soil & air temperatures that promote recovery.  As a result, we want to avoid additional care and attention having to be devoted to repairing damage in small, concentrated areas as we move into Spring and Summer.

Please ensure your member bag tag is on display at all times on the course.  The professional shop have stock of bag tags and current stickers if the office is closed.

Filtering In

The Club policy for filtering in with groups coming round to the 1st and 11th tees can be found here.

If there is a group on or approaching the 10th or 18th green when you arrive at the 1st or 11th tee, they have priority to continue their round.  Once you have let one group do this then you may tee off next.

Please check you are teeing off from the correct tee.  The times can be found near the 1st tee, outside the Professional Shop, on the main noticeboard in the clubhouse and on the homepage of the members area of the website.

A reminder that dogs may only be taken on the course after 12.00pm and must be kept on a lead at all times.  The information can be found here.

Our team recently completed the Beer Professional Programme, ensuring we maintain the highest standards in beer service. Click here to read more about what the training covered and how it enhances your experience at Colchester Golf Club.

News Report

(Clive Hebden)

Zac Taylor playing off plus one handicap returned an excellent 36 points to win Colchester Golf Club’s 6th edition of Walk on Stablefords.

Not that Taylor had it all his own way as Catherine Chick returned a similar score from her 22 handicap, but in the countback Taylor had recorded a level par back nine whilst Chick had carded a couple of double bogies and a no-return on her back nine giving Taylor the deserved win.

With a total of four birdies balanced against three bogeys Taylor had proved himself to be a rightful winner on this bright, sunny day.  Matt Black (9) returning a card with 35 points took third place and 14 handicapper Nick Gerrard with 34 points bagging fourth.

The ladies earlier in the week had played a fourteen-hole Texas Scramble with the team of Nesta James, Nicola Allston and Sheila Dornan with 53 points taking the top spot after a countback from the team of Caroline Chambers, Lisa and Marilyn Free.

On a total of 54 points Margaret Carter, Nerys Horrocks and Jane Lochore safely took third place.

Following the completion of the first round of the Winter League Knockout the 16 qualifiers have been whittled down to pairs now vying for a semi-final place. Joe Jackson and Donald Parish will play Carl Bartlett and Andrew Schofield whilst Lewis and Ben Barber will play Mark Joel and David Boyden.

In the other half of the draw Dan Bradley and Tom McNama will play Andrew Archer and Paul French and the final Quarter Final will be between two father and son pairings, Nick and Fin Sinclair and last year’s losing finalists Simon and Alex Rippingale.
